In lieu of my usual monthly post, My 5 Favorite Things, I present to you my 5 top recipes from my own personal Thanksgiving Menu this year.
Growing up in a typical Italian family, such as mine, Thanksgiving was merely another holiday opportunity to serve either lasagna or manicotti. Those were great times with really good food, but that is no longer my world. I love brining and roasting a free-range turkey that is free of hormones, antibiotics, and pesticide-free feed. I try to make sure every dish is healthy, flavorful and fun. The fall vegetables are so colorful and make any table look festive. As we eat, I like to casually mention that most of my shopping was done at the local farmers market, choosing foods that are organic and in season.
This is my simple way of educating my family that sustainability and whole food nutrition is our responsibility as a community. Now don’t freak out– but you will notice that I add some sugar to my turkey brine and my cocktail.
Here’s what I’m going to say about that, “Its okay!!” It is a holiday. It is a celebration. Do I do this all the time? No. On this one day, its okay to break some of the rules. Besides, my mom will undoubtedly slip a tray of lasagna through the back door. I’m just going to let that slide too, because….. The most important thing at my holiday table isn’t the food, it’s the people I love sitting around it…laughing, loving, and creating memories with me.
Wishing you all a very Happy Thanksgiving Holiday.
